Ghana will mark 70 years of independence in 2027. In 1957, it became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule, sparking a continent-wide liberation movement. On this trip, I will explore three regions: Accra, the Volta Riverlands, and Elmina’s coastal forts. I invite you to join a journey that promises to be rich in culture, leisure, and history connected to the Black Star.
I’ll meet you at the airport and get you settled into your hotel. Once you have had a moment to breathe, I plan to head out with the group for a welcome dinner in the Osu district to get a taste of the city’s energy.
Our morning starts at the National Museum to ground the group in the history of the Gold Coast. We visit the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre and the Arts Centre afterward to see craftsmen working with wood and metal before the city-wide vigils begin tonight.
We head into Black Star Square for the 70th Independence Day parade. You will be in the mix for the military processions and the cultural displays. Afterward, we visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to pay respects at the final resting place of the nation’s founder.
We pivot east into the Volta Region to steer clear of the holiday crowds heading south. After checking into a riverside lodge, we take a boat cruise on the Volta River to see the Adomi Bridge and the riverine communities.
Our day is spent in a Krobo village for a bead-making workshop. You will see the process of pounding recycled glass and firing it in traditional clay ovens to create the famous “Bodom” beads. After lunch, we return to Accra.
Now that the holiday traffic has cleared, we lead the way south toward the Central Region. We head to the fishing port of Elmina for a stay at a beach resort where the evening is spent quietly by the Atlantic.st savannah.
We walk through Cape Coast Castle and the “Door of No Return.” Afterward, we take a brief visit to Kakum National Park to see the forest, then return to the coast.
We catch the Elmina fishing fleet in the morning light before the drive back to Accra. Once back at the hotel, the evening is free for our final celebratory dinner.
After breakfast, we visit the Makola Market for final souvenir shopping before the transfer to the airport. For those staying for the 50/54 Project, we move toward Cotonou for the scheduled rest day.

Most travelers will need a visa before arrival, and it’s best to apply early to avoid delays. You can apply through the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C., or your nearest Ghanaian embassy
Yes. Not as a formality, but as a safety net. Medical situations, delays, or unexpected changes can happen, and having coverage makes a real difference.
The recommended option is through Allianz Travel Insurance. The plans are straightforward, and claims are easier to manage than most alternatives. It is one of those things that feels unnecessary until it is not.
The local currency is the Ghanaian Cedi (GHS). Card payments and ATMs are easy to find in Accra, but outside those areas, cash becomes more useful. Keeping smaller notes on hand helps with markets, taxis, and everyday purchases.
You’ll actually be there for Ghana’s Independence Day on March 6, and we’ve made sure the itinerary gives you time to experience the celebrations.
In Accra, internet connectivity is generally reliable. Once you travel outside the city, however, coverage can become less predictable. Purchasing a local SIM card usually improves your connection, but signal strength will still vary by location.
If you need consistent internet for work, video calls, or uploading content, portable options like Starlink or Google Fi (Save $60 when you join Google Fi using Code: C36FUE at checkout) can be very helpful. They aren’t essential for every traveler, but they make a real difference if staying connected is a priority for you
Light, breathable clothing works best. The climate is warm and humid most of the time. Comfortable shoes are important for walking days. A small daypack, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle will go a long way
