This itinerary centers on the 30th edition of FESPACO, the largest film festival on the continent. Our journey will take us south to the hand-painted royal courts of Tiébélé, and the desert-fringe mosques of the west serve as the backdrop for the journey. We plan to explore locations built for those who value cultural context and photography, ending among the sacred sandstone peaks of Sindou and the stillness of the most iconic landscapes in Burkina Faso.
Itinerary
Arriving in Ouagadougou, the first step is getting to the hotel and grabbing dinner together. The capital is completely taken over by FESPACO, the largest film festival in Africa, giving us a perfect high-energy start to the trip.
Spending the entire day at the festival grounds puts us right in the middle of the action. Attending screenings and interacting with filmmakers from across the continent provides a direct look at the current state of African cinema.
A quick 1-hour drive outside the city leads to Bazoule. This sacred village holds a unique history with the local crocodiles, and seeing the physical interaction between the villagers and the reptiles is incredible. Pushing south afterward, a 3.5-hour transit brings us to Tiébélé for the night.
Walking through the Kassena royal court in Tiébélé reveals houses covered in intricate, hand-painted geometric patterns. Understanding the social structure behind these designs anchors the morning. Once finished, our drive heads west toward Bobo-Dioulasso
Bobo carries a completely different rhythm. Exploring the mud-brick Grand Mosque and walking through Kibidwé, the oldest neighborhood in the city, traces the deep trade history of the region.
A drive south into the Banfora region exposes the Sindou Peaks. These rock formations hold deep spiritual significance for the local Senoufo people. Spending time here connects the physical environment directly to the culture.
Back to Ouagadougou closes out the loop. Returning to the capital gives us a final evening to wrap up the FESPACO energy and grab a final group dinner.
Departure day. Flights head out, or the journey continues directly across the border into Ghana.
