The journey starts in Abidjan, the capital of Côte d’Ivoire, a city known for its urban culture and the way francophone West Africa expresses itself through business, movement, and everyday life. From there, the route moves north and outward, opening into long road stretches and border crossings where language, systems, and daily life begin to shift.
As the journey unfolds, expect real distance, trade-driven towns, coastal slowdowns, and inland areas where movement depends on terrain and local conditions. It’s a demanding route at times, but it gives a clear sense of how this part of West Africa functions beyond its capitals.
Arriving in Abidjan, the first step is getting to the hotel and grabbing dinner together. This francophone city is a high-energy baseline city, giving us a chance to rest and connect before the overland route begins.
Leaving Abidjan, the drive heads north toward Man. It is a long haul, roughly 9 hours on the road, but it brings us close to the border, with the landscape shifting into mountainous hill country.
After breakfast, the journey crosses the Loguatuo border into Liberia. Once immigration is complete, the route stops at two small local villages before arriving in Ganta, a busy trading hub that reflects cross-border commerce.
Heading out of Ganta, expect about a 4-hour drive toward Monrovia. Arriving on the coast gives time to settle into the capital and prepare to explore its layered history.
The morning begins with a city tour of Monrovia, including the National Museum and historic True Whig Party structures, offering insight into the country’s Americo-Liberian roots.
A shorter 2.5-hour drive leads to Robertsport, known for its surf breaks and old architecture. The afternoon is spent around Lake Piso and within the fishing community, alongside a mask-making demonstration.
The route crosses into Sierra Leone. After clearing the border, a boat ride across the Moa River leads into the protected sanctuary of Tiwai Island
The morning is spent tracking wildlife in the forest, an area known for primates and pygmy hippos. Afterward, a cultural ceremony takes place in the nearby village
Departing for Bo, the cultural center of the Mende people, the route includes a visit to local diamond mining areas and an introduction to Poro society mask-making traditions.
The journey continues to Freetown, about a 4-hour drive. After check-in, visits to coastal historical sites, including the Cotton Tree and the Peace Museum, trace the city’s origins
Departure day, with flights out of Freetown or the option to continue onward into Guinea.
